Envisioning the Future after 50 Years of Science and Discovery

JCPP will, this year, celebrate the publication of its 50th volume and the Editors are delighted to introduce a special issue, comprising a series of articles by distinguished scientists in the child and adolescent mental health field, to commemorate this memorable occasion.

The papers are forward thinking 'perspective pieces' which encapsulate some of the key advances in the field over the past half-century and are visionary in their ambition to guide and inspire child and adolescent mental health professionals around the globe and envision the future of the field for the next 50 years ....

The overarching intention when the JCPP was founded in 1960 was that it publish quality clinical, academic and research papers from all the key disciplines - papers which contribute to the advancement and enhancement of child and adolescent mental health and engender a greater understanding of the needs of service users.

The aims of the journal were clearly stated at that time by the late Colin Hindley, one of the three original editors: 'In the absence of a unified body of generally accepted fact and theory, the Journal aims to bring together contributions of high quality, from different points of view in order to promote an essential integration'.

From the outset, the journal featured papers by the luminaries of the day; then, as now, the editorial and advisory boards consisted of notable psychiatrists and psychologists and other disciplines from Europe and the United States, reflecting the Journal's ongoing commitment to multidisciplinary and multinational representation. The range of topics reflected the clinical experience, academic background and wide range of interests of Dr Emanuel Miller, the founder, and remains the aims and scope of the Journal today, with different emphases reflecting the great changes in knowledge and quality in the last 50 years. Initially appearing twice annually with a budget of under 100 pages, the journal has gone from strength to strength and now appears monthly.

It has been described as the leading journal of its kind in the world and has an ISI impact factor of 3.927, ranking it 3rd in the developmental psychology category and 7th in the psychiatry category.
