'Obesity is the most common chronic illness in childhood and adolescence. The direct costs of obesity and associated complications have been estimated as 2-4% of total NHS expenditure. Successful interventions must address the many different areas of the young person's life that are affected by obesity. Very few obesity programs for children and adolescents exist in the UK, and the evidence base for preventive or therapeutic interventions is extremely scanty. Key features of 'what works' include parental involvement, regular contact, decreasing sedentary activity, and regulation of eating behaviours. The primary aim is to prevent weight cycling and binges and promote weight maintenanceThe presentation describes the possible journey that a young person referred to a tertiary weight management clinic may take including what questions to ask at the beginning and the alternative treatment options that might be offered. Information on medical and surgical management will be presented. Multi-modal, developmentally appropriate programmes produce better results than dietary advice and exercise programmes alone. An evolving Lifestyle management approach will be described that focuses on the principle of weight maintenance and a promoting a healthy lifestyle. Motivational Interviewing and Solution Focused techniques inform the assessment and engagement process. Weekly sessions include tasks addressing healthy lifestyle choices and eating behaviours. Sessions also offer information on eating choices. Parents are key members of the sessions. Emotional responses to stress and food are also addressed and sessions are designed to build confidence, assertiveness and self esteem.'
